The trade url will not be accepted into the system no matter what I try.

There are two reasons for that:

1. The trade offer URL you enter is wrong (bad copy and paste, you are using other people's URL or things like that).
2. Your account is not eligible for using Trade Offer (you can test this with friends).

Enable Steam Guard and wait 15 days.
